Primary Schools in Maldon
Maldon hosts 5 primary schools. Four of these fall under the auspices of the Local Education Authority (Essex County Council) - All Saints Maldon Church Of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, Maldon Primary School, St Francis Catholic Primary School and Wentworth Primary School. A fifth, Maldon Court Preparatory School, is independent.
The table below summarises some of the key numbers people might look at in judging a school, if you are that kind of person. The data comes from the most recent batch of figures (2012) released by the Department for Education. What you find here is just a snippet, a whole bunch of numbers are available on the department's website, including more information on some of the variables used here. Ofsted reports are also available from the Ofsted website.
You will notice that I include data for Heybridge Primary School, despite it not being in Maldon. This is NOT for comedic purposes, rather to show how grateful Maldonians should be that they live up the hill rather than down it.

What do the numbers show? Clearly, St Francis put on a good performance when those Ofsted inspectors turned up in the classrooms with their pens and clipboards. 85% of pupils are achieving par for the course in English and Maths and an exceedingly high 45% are achieving the level of 14 year olds.
Wentworth clearly does not have as many child geniuses as St Francis, but is doing a good job of producing kids who are as smart as they should be for their age category. Curiously, despite good performances in English and Maths, the lowest absenteeism rate and the best pupil/teacher ratios in the area, Ofsted decided to give it a score of 3 (1 being outstanding and 4 inadequate).
All Saints performs worse than Wentworth in level 4 results in English and Maths, has more truants and packs more pupils into a classroom but received an Ofsted score of 2. Ofsted finally show some consistency in awarding Maldon Primary School a 3 which seems fair given the figures.
Now, how do you go about getting your child(ren) into one of these schools? If it’s Heybridge Primary School you desire it’s simple – just apply. For the rest it is slightly more nuanced.
To get a place at St Francis you had better be Catholic, or at a minimum a Christian of some denomination or another. All Saints (in the north of Maldon), Maldon Primary School (east) and Wentworth (west) cannot guarantee a place to those who live in the priority admission area. In the event of oversubscription (which will be the case) the following criteria is used:

‘Looked After Children’ take precedence in these schools – that means children living with foster parents, in a children’s home or with some other family. After that, living in the priority admission area or having a sibling at the school (or a combination of the two) comes into play.
Basically, either get your kid in a foster home or live close to the school. I recommend the second option. A word about Maldon Court Preparatory School – I’m quite sure they will provide the best educational results for your child. If you really value your child’s education so much as to spend £6,500 a year in tuition fees then, by all means, go for it. |
