Maldon Within Essex
Anecdotally, Maldon represents a pretty middling place. Not as chavy as Witham or as scummy as Braintree, not as rough as ex-cockney dominated Basildon and Southend but not as well-to-do as leafy Brentwood or middle class Chelmsford. The lack of any known celebrities in the town attests to the fact that there are more desirable spots in Essex.
Not being connected to a train branch into London, Maldon is spared the yuppies and suits that are prepared to waste hours of commuting to combine London wages with Essex house prices and nitrogen dioxide levels.
Therefore, Maldon may be short on lawyers, CEOs and investment bankers, but you might find an abundance of lower professionals working in insurance and accountancy.

Empirically evaluating Maldon’s place within Essex is not easy. Most data is at the district level (Maldon District contains 17 wards, as far away as Burnham and Southminster) which isn’t very helpful when trying to analyse an individual town. In fact, the section called ‘Maldon Compared with Maldon’ will show just how diverse different areas are within Maldon.
Nonetheless, I’ve managed to scrape together a few bits of information from government sources which include details of Maldon the town as well as Maldon the district. |
Figures for the unitary authorities of Southend and Thurrock are more difficult to get hold of and are omitted.
Maldon’s average status within Essex is backed up by the numbers. Rates for unemployment, educational attainment and child poverty don’t stray far from the Essex average. Whilst Brentwood, Chelmsford and Uttlesford districts tend to trump Maldon on most measures, Maldon kicks the bums of Basildon, Harlow and Tendring (of course, if you cherish child poverty or low education then the reverse is true).

In comparison to Maldon district, the town of Maldon is slightly less Christian, a tad more work shy, a little less white (though Primary School numbers suggest this may change in the future) and a bit more stupid.
In all honesty there is very little difference between the two and it’s probably all down to those few notorious blue-skinned school drop-outs whose mystical religion forbids them to work. There are rumours they originate somewhere on King Street.
One large difference between Maldon town and Maldon district is in the percentage of residents living in social accommodation. While the district is on a par with the wider Essex region, the figure for the town is much lower (and the ‘Maldon Compared with Maldon' section will show how even this number is down to one particular area of Maldon).
